  5. Texture: The texture of Nutrisystem's food can also vary, with some items being praised for their consistency and others criticized for being too dry or chewy.

Breakfast

nu2

  1. Harvest Nut Oat Bar: A sticky and chewy granola bar with a blend of nuts and oats, providing 160 calories, 7g of protein, and 8g of sugar per serving.

  2. Peanut Butter Oat Bar: A favorite option, offering the delicious flavor of peanut butter combined with oats, providing 160 calories, 6g of protein, and 7g of sugar per serving.

  3. Blueberry Muffin: Despite tasting slightly processed, this muffin offers a good portion size and a burst of blueberry flavor. It provides 150 calories, 6g of protein, and 8g of sugar per serving.

  4. Cereal: A satisfying option similar to Special K, providing a crunchy and flavorful breakfast with only 130 calories per serving.

  5. Granola: A hearty and nutritious choice packed with whole grains, nuts, and seeds, offering a balanced blend of flavors and textures.

  6. Oatmeal: A classic breakfast staple that is likely to be filling and comforting, providing warmth and energy for the day ahead.

  7. Pancake Mix: While not described in detail, Nutrisystem's pancake mix could offer a convenient and easy-to-prepare breakfast option, perfect for those with busy mornings.

img-8639

As for the frozen meals, I wasn't impressed. Unlike the nonperishable items, there wasn't much selection. I was given waffles, pancakes, a cinnamon roll, a bagel and a turkey bacon, egg and cheese muffin -- a lot of carbohydrates. I found the pancakes dry, tasteless and its protein powder taste was very apparent. The pancakes contain 150 calories, 7 g of sugar and 6 g of protein. The buttermilk waffles were better and flakey, golden brown. There is still a taste of protein in there, but it is milder than the pancakes. It is not recommended to add butter or syrup, but I would. Two waffles are 160 calories, 7 g sugar and 5 g protein.

Lunch

nu1

For lunch, my meal plan consisted of 14 nonperishable and eight frozen meals. Among the nonperishable options, I struggled to find something appetizing. The white cheddar mac and cheese, despite its easy preparation akin to Kraft Easy Mac, disappointed with its overpowering processed taste. If you're craving mac and cheese, I'd recommend sticking with Kraft; it offers a similar nutritional profile with less of that artificial flavor. Although the Nutrisystem version boasts 3 more grams of protein, it falls short in taste.

Additionally, the chocolate caramel bar and chewy trail mix bar were passable but still retained that distinct processed taste. Combining a granola bar with a side vegetable didn't seem like a fulfilling lunch option to me. Overall, while the convenience of the meals is undeniable, their flavor and satisfaction leave something to be desired.

img-8646

The frozen lunch options offered a slight improvement in taste. The hamburger, boasting 240 calories, 8g fat, 14g protein, 540mg sodium, and 5g sugar, albeit smaller than expected, delivered a familiar frozen hamburger flavor. Though the texture leaned towards rubbery, it remained palatable. Another option, the spinach and cheese pretzel melt, packed 230 calories, 12g protein, 3g sugar, 350mg sodium, and 6g total fat. Despite its light filling and subtle flavor, it resembled more of a pretzel than a fulfilling meal. Nonetheless, it could suffice as a lunch option, providing a decent level of satiety.

Dinnernu3

I received 14 nonperishable and seven frozen dinner items, much like the previous meals. The shelf-stable dinners were akin to lunch options—quick to prepare and low in calories. One such meal was the bean bolognese, conveniently packed in a bag and requiring only a few minutes in the microwave. With 200 calories, 5g total fat, 11g protein, 3g sugar, and 460mg sodium, it resembled canned Campbell's soup with a thicker consistency. While not the most flavorful, it served as a decent meatless choice. Another standout was the harvest grain bowl, also packaged in a bag for easy heating. Offering 240 calories, 8g total fat, 10g protein, 3g sugar, and 540mg sodium, this savory dish quickly became a dinner favorite. Its satisfying taste and wholesome ingredients made it a meal I would willingly purchase from the store.

img-8650

Once more, the frozen meals failed to meet expectations. Take the cheddar mac and cheese, for example—it should have been a simple dish to make delicious, yet it fell short. The cheese sauce included whey protein and a host of other hard-to-pronounce ingredients, resulting in a chunky texture that didn't quite hit the mark. While the pasta itself was satisfactory, I found myself preferring Kraft mac and cheese over Nutrisystem's version. On the other hand, the Italian sausage and turkey pepperoni pizza offered a more favorable experience. Sized similarly to my hand, it packed 260 calories, 8g fat, 15g protein, 4g sugar, and 590mg sodium. Unlike the mac and cheese, this pizza tasted akin to other frozen pizzas and earned my approval, especially since it lacked whey protein.

Snacks and dessert

nu4

Finally, my shipment included 14 nonperishable and seven frozen snacks and desserts. Unfortunately, the shelf snacks were a major letdown. I had hoped the white cheddar popcorn would rival other popcorn options from well-known diet food brands, but the artificial cheese flavor left much to be desired. In fact, it was nearly inedible, with whey protein listed as one of the main ingredients. Similarly, the cheese puffs failed to impress, lacking the authentic taste of real cheese and relying instead on "cheddar cheese seasoning." These snacks also boasted added protein, but their lackluster flavor left me disappointed.

img-8642

Fortunately, the frozen snacks and desserts offered some redemption. The chocolate cupcake, in particular, stood out, tasting much like any other chocolate cupcake I've had. Surprisingly, I couldn't detect the added protein powder, which was a pleasant surprise. With 140 calories, 9g of sugar, 5g of protein, and 5g of total fat, it was a satisfying treat. Similarly, the vanilla ice cream sandwich impressed with its authentic flavor and texture. Featuring real low-fat ice cream, it boasted just 130 calories, 2g of total fat, 5g of protein, and 12g of sugar.

Shakes

nu5

Alongside my meal plan, I opted for a shipment of shakes to enhance my Nutrisystem experience. These shakes, considered as one PowerFuel serving each, could be incorporated into various meals and snacks throughout the day.

In the package, I received seven packets of Pro Sync chocolate fudge shake mix and two containers, each containing 14 servings, of vanilla and chocolate shakes. Each serving boasted 120 calories, 15g of protein, 5g of sugar, 2g of total fat, and a blend of 14 added vitamins and minerals.

Both flavors of the shakes had a pronounced sweetener taste. Despite this, their consistency remained smooth and devoid of clumps, akin to other protein shakes I've tried. However, the overpowering processed sugar flavor was a downside for me.

  • Opt for a homemade flex meal, such as grilled chicken (2 ounces) served with a refreshing strawberry (1 cup) spinach salad.

  • Delight in a Nutrisystem dinner featuring a meatloaf sandwich, complemented by steamed green beans and broccoli.

Evening Nutrisystem Snack:

  • Wrap up your day with a delicious Nutrisystem snack: an ice cream sandwich, a sweet treat to enjoy guilt-free.

Throughout the day, you'll notice a balance between Nutrisystem meals and flex options, ensuring a diverse and satisfying menu. Plus, the incorporation of power fuels, smart carbs, and plenty of vegetables ensures you're getting the nutrients your body needs to thrive.

What do nutritionists say?

I reached out to two experts well-versed in the fields of nutrition and weight loss to gather their insights on Nutrisystem and similar programs. Dr. Melina B. Jampolis, a renowned physician and nutrition specialist, shared her perspective based on a study that assessed the efficacy of popular diet companies in facilitating weight loss over one year.

Dr. Jampolis highlighted that while research indicates Jenny Craig as slightly more effective, leading to a nearly 5% weight loss after a year, Nutrisystem has shown about a 3.8% loss. She emphasized that these results were derived from short-term outcomes, emphasizing the necessity for further investigation into their long-term effects. Dr. Jampolis cautioned that while programs like Nutrisystem might initiate weight loss, sustained long-term benefits are not guaranteed.

Dr. Zhaoping Li, a distinguished professor of medicine at UCLA, offered insights into the limitations of conventional weight loss programs. Dr. Li stressed the importance of recognizing individual metabolic differences, citing factors such as sex, age, body composition, and physical activity levels. She emphasized the necessity for personalized approaches to weight loss, suggesting that generic, one-size-fits-all programs may not sufficiently address individual needs.

Both experts underscored the need for tailored guidance and personalized strategies in weight loss endeavors, suggesting that a departure from standardized approaches is imperative for more impactful results. They advocate for a shift towards individualized interventions to effectively address the complexities of weight management.
